Where I come from --
I was born in Korea but I grew up with music of Mozart and Brahms because
my father always listened to their music. Ironically I didn't have a
chance to learn Korean traditional music in Korea. I started
learning Korean music at UCLA.

I wanted to
become a composer when I was quite young. Luckily I got into Seoul
Arts High School as a composition major three months after I decided to
major in music. Thanks to my old teachers in high school and
college in Korea, I got very good quality theory background.

What I do now --
I got my Ph.d.
from UCLA in music composition and theory. My dissertation topic
is Benjamin Britten's Curlew River along with a musical
composition, Johannes for orchestra. I am currently
teaching at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

What is next --
Teaching and
writing music is a good part of my life. I have been attending
many conferences and get more performances. My research includes
music of Benjamin Britten and 21st century curriculum. I have been
working on a new music workshop for singers and composers: Motivate
with New Music. I am excited to do more activities in Korea.
I miss my family and friends in Korea. |
